Lt. Archie Bower, pilot of the doomed "Straight Shot", was trapped in the spinning plane and was the last to leave. He assisted fatally wounded Joe Popowitz (radioman) to bail out of the plane, only to learn that Joe later died of his wounds in a German prison. Archie Bower survived the war and his recollections of this event are recorded under "The Mission" as a separate story titled Bower. Archie Bower went on to fly B-29's in Korea and later flew B-52's for SAC until he retired.
