Mission NarrativeMission No. 98Date - July 31, 1944 Target - Munich This was another mission to Munich in the month of July. This time the target was the BMW Aero Engine Works. The 457th put up 36 planes and formed the entire 94th Wing. At the target there was a dense overcast and bombing was done by PFF. Anti-aircraft fire was heavy and accurate on the low box and plane s/n 42-97087 took a direct hit by flak and the right wing broke off. The plane spun down and exploded. Bombing results were unobserved. Plane s/n 42-97087, named "Tujunga," and piloted by Lt Byron S. Schiffman took a direct hit by flak in the target area. Engine #1 caught fire and the planes wing broke off. The plane spiraled down and exploded. |
