Mission Narrative

Mission No. 103
Date - August 05, 1944
Target - Nienberg - Ditched
The target for this mission was a large oil dump outside Nienburg, Germany. The 457th put up three 12 ship boxes. The target area was CAVU and heavy smoke from preceeding bombing obscured the target. Bombs were dropped by triangulation. There was no flak at the target but one plane 42-97069 was hit by flack sent up by coastal gunners while entering the enemy coast. The damage was such that the pilot elected to ditch the plane in the North Sea. All the crew were rescued.
Plane s/n 42-97060, named "Calamity Jane II," and flown by Lt Charles Canfield was hit by flack as they passed over Holland on their way to the target at Nienburg, Germany. Two engines were knocked out by the flak and a fire was started in the oxygen system. A third engine failed and the pilot elected to ditch the ship. After a near perfect ditching the crew boarded life rafts, the plane broke in half and sank in less than 30 seconds. They spent about three hours in their dinghie when a Danish fishing boat E-311 *Erika* picked them up and the skipper, Carlo Jensen, offered to take them to England. British Air-Sea rescue picked up the incoming Danish vessel and guided them to port. All the crew survived and returned to Glatton.
