Mission Narrative

Mission No. 224
Date - April 05, 1945
Target - Ingolstadt - Crashed on takeoff
The target on this date was the Ordinance Depot at Ingolstadt, Germany . The Commanding Officer of the 748 Squadron, Major Dozier, was designated Air Commander. As the lead aircraft containing Major Dozier and Lt Donald Snow, lifted off the runway, #2 engine burst into flames. The plane s/n 44-8152 crashed into the ground seconds later, the full load of bomb exploded and an explosion was heard throughout the field at Glatton. Miraculously, there was one survivor. The mission was delayed but eventually got airborn but was out of position in the bomber stream because of the delay. The group bombed in trail at 14000 feet because of heavy clouds at the briefed altitude. Bomb results were unknown.
Plane s/n 44-8152, named "Miss Ida," was piloted by Lt Donald B. Snow, with Air Commander Major Edward B. Dozier aboard. The plane rolled down the runway for takeoff and became airborn but then a fire appeared in engine #2. The plane lost altitude and crashed a short distance from the end of the runway. The full load of bombs and fuel exploded and left a hole in the ground over eight feet deep. Miraculously, one member of the crew survived.
